This seems to be a common problem, but it's not an easy fix as far as I can see and it's probably best to take it in for professional service.

"..........On my wife's machine - a Brother CS6000i - she's having a problem where after you switch it on it will feed the fabric backwards.

She'll lower the presser foot and press the foot pedal and the feed direction will be backwards.

If you press the "reverse stitch button" it feeds in the same direction (as it should)..............

.................There's a little stepper motor that moves a little white gear 90 degrees one way or the other to direct the feed guides. There's a spring on the back of that gear that looks like it's supposed to help return the gear to the forward direction and it looks shot. The gear only rotates back about 45 or 50 degrees when the stepper motor lets it rotate free.

I oiled it hoping just some lubrication would help - maybe it had enough pull left if it was easier to pull - but it looks like we'll be taking it to the shop to get that replaced."
