Here's what you can try and what Google recommands, in short:

  • Power cycle (restart) your device
  • Check for system updates - navigate to Settings > System > System update (this procedure can vary depending on your model)
  • Free up space on the internal storage
  • Update your apps - open the Playstore app, tap the profile icon, tap Manage apps and devices and install available updates
  • Force stop apps you're not using - you can do this from the Settings menu
  • Boot into Safe mode and see if the speed increases dramatically, restart your device and remove one 3rd party app at a time (reboot tablet each time) to find out which one is causing the issue
  • Try factory resetting the tablet (remember to do a FULL BACKUP, as after resetting all unsaved data will be LOST)

In this article by Kevin Purdy you'll also find other tips to speed up your phone or tablet, more specifically:

  • Disable animations (requires Developer Options to be enabled)
  • Replace stock Android launcher with a more performing one, like Nova
  • Swap to Google’s Go Apps
  • Opt for Lite app versions or use web apps
  • Uninstall unnecessary apps
  • Reduce app data usage when possible
  • And more...

I don't understand abt 3/4th of what is said here. And, these items are not found when I do a search, like Developer something. That is not located on my Tab A 8. Other items mentioned here are not found either. So, what do I do now? Toss it? It's almost worthless, it's so slow.

@suzannec43668 what tablet do you have? A SM-T290 or a SM-X200 etc?

The very first thing you want to do is to get rid of all unnecessary preinstalled apps. To disable those go to Settings ==> Apps ==> App Manager ==> Select the app ==> Disable

You also should clear the cache and files that are just hogging memory. Get rid of them by Settings==>Apps==>App Manager==> Clear Cache/Clear Data

Next I would turn off background processes, by Settings ==> Developer Options ==> Don’t Keep Activities

If everything else has no effect, you may need to consider a factory reset. Make sure that you have backed up your data (Images/files/contacts etc.) since those will be lost

Suzanne - 'Developer Options' is hidden by default.

To unhide the Developer options menu:

1 Go to "Settings"

2 Tap "About device" or "About phone"

3 Tap “Software information”

4 Tap “Build number” seven times.

This will unhide the 'Developer Options' settings where most of the things discussed here can be done.
