Metering Selector Dial Repair

The metering selector dial on my D700 is broken. The dial spins freely 360 degrees but the camera stays in the center weighted metering mode. Does anyone know if it is possible to repair that part and, if so, any resources on how I would go about it?

Thanks

Hi @simonc137

Here's the service manual for the camera.

The metering mode dial unit (part ID #B782) is shown being removed on p.43 of 268 (pdf numbering - shown as 37 in the page box on the header bar).

Unfortunately if the dial is broken I cannot find a replacement for it and there isn't a parts list in the manual. I did find this parts list for the camera which may have the part number in it rather than just a part ID as shown in the manual. You may be able to find it by searching for the part number and not the name of the part. Unfortunately though, you have to buy it.

Note: the supplier of the parts list, does not have the metering mode dial unit as a spare part

Hopefully this is of some help.

Hi @jayeff

Thanks so much for your answer. I had the repair manual already but was struggling to find the part number. I may end up purchasing the parts list, but in the meantime I think I’ll stick with the camera as is. Fortunately the programmable buttons can be set to allow me the functionality I was missing with the broken dial. Since the camera is in perfect working condition apart from the dial I don’t think it would be worth it to try repair it at this point. But I’m going to keep an eye out for some used/broken D700s in order to get comfortable working on it before getting stuck into this one.

Thanks again for your answer. Knowing where to find that parts list in future is is going to be a big help.
