Battery replaced, now randomly shuts off

I replaced my MBP’s battery. It boots, but turns back off after anywhere between 1 and 10 seconds of usage, while connected to charge. I got the battery from iFixit and followed the installation guide without any obvious errors. What am I doing wrong?

Here's what I've tried:

  • resetting SMC -- no effect
  • running diagnostics (holding D during boot) -- no issues found
  • using Safe Mode -- no effect

I'm limited in my diagnostic abilities due to the fact that the laptop shuts off before I can really do anything.

Install this great app Coconut Battery it will allow to see what’s happening. Post a snapshot of the main window so we can see it as well.

@danj : It’s not possible to install anything. The laptop shuts off too quickly, often within seconds of logging in.

@amshepherd Have you tried to start the Mac in safe mode?

Safe Mode. That might help narrowing things down further

@geirandersen issue unfortunately persists in safe mode.

@amshepherd Did you buy the replacement battery from a reputable vendor? Batteries can be faulty, even from highly reputable vendors, but much, much more so from run-of-the-mill “dime” stores.

Current working hypothesis is that the battery was DOA. I'm returning it to iFixit.
