iPad Air 2 Spotlight Backlight Problem

Hi All,

I have been tasked to fix my aunt’s iPad Air 2 screen with some backlight issues. However, I don’t know whether this is a fault of the screen or the motherboard. I know bad backlight diodes/ICs will cause a problem similar to this, but the iPad is also bent on the side where the problem is occuring.

Can someone tell me whether this is a problem with the screen or motherboard so I can buy the right parts? Thank you in advance.

Was it ever dropped? That first picture that shows the gap on the side looks like a swollen battery. I'm not sure that will help the light issue, though. But if the battery is swollen, you need to replace it before continuing to use/charge it. Swollen batteries are fire hazards.

I second @amber's thoughts here; a swollen battery could be pressing against the screen and causing those problems. Definitely time to open it up. Follow the display replacement guide through step 28, then turn it on again and check to see if the problem persists. At that time, examine the battery for any swelling; it'll look more like a pillow than a flat rectangle if it's going bad.
