Buy yourself an OBD2 diagnostic scanner and connect to your cars OBD2 port. The engine check light could mean a number of things. The OBD2 scanner onscreen will give a code(s). The code is then translated into what part is causing the problem.

The CR-V automatic, has a cable selector connected to the gearbox inside the engine bay. The cable may have snapped or needs readjusting.
