Hi Joan,

I'm reading your question as indicating that there's dust or some other unwanted substance underneath the glass on the scanning bed, and I assume it's interfering with getting a good scan, especially since your model doesn't have an automatic document feeder.

So the question is, how to get to the bottom side of the glass to clean it? I didn't find anything on the HP website for your printer, so I'm going to have to wing it.

If you take a look at the HP ENVY 5530 Gear for Scanner Arm Replacement guide, it shows how to replace the gear that drives the scanner arm. That's the part that runs back and forth, shining a light on your document and reading in the lines of pixels to make a picture out of it.

The point here is that the scanning arm is located directly under the glass, the exact place you're looking to get to to clean. So as it turns out, if you follow the instructions right up to Step 5 and stop there, you'll have the top of the scanner bed off and can clean it.
