Strange vertical lines with random pixel colours

Hey everyone,

Received a late 2009 Mac model 10,1 for a repair, the screen was disconnected but after reconnecting there are bars of pixels randomly coloured, looks like wall paper. See attached

What does an external display look like? Is the image clean on it?

@danj I wouldn't have any way of testing that, I don't see any hdmi or vga ports on the back.

@millerbes - Mac's use mini DisplayPort connections which then can connect via an adapter to VGA or HDMI. You'll need to grab one.

@danj - Alright, just ordered one, be here by tomorrow, i've installed a spare HDD into the mac, going to install some sort of headless linux OS onto it for now. Can I plugin my windows USB keyboard into the mac? and what key combo would it be to bring up the boot device screen?

by

@millerbes - How about just installing the proper OS for the system, so the system is more useful. You can go upto macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

Hi there, after a bit of thinking I decided to tear down the iMac and bake the GPU in the oven. This managed to reset the solder and made the lines go away.

I followed the ifixit guide to tear down the machine to get at the GPU, removed thermal paste. Then placed the GPU on a baking tray supported with pillars of tinfoil. I baked the GPU at 200⁰C for 15 minutes then reassembled the iMac and to my surprise it booted :D

Thanks everyone!

Not good ;-{

You have proved the issue is within the GPU logic. I'm suspecting the VRAM chips need replacing. If you have a hot work station you could try reflowing the chips with some fresh flux/solder and hope fo the best. Follow this guide iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2308 Logic Board Replacement to take it out. Otherwise its time for a new logic board.
