Do you see a faint image on the screen? Assuming so, the problem could be the screen itself, the inverter cable, or the inverter. The inverter itself is the least likely of the three to be the problem. In my experience with white/black MacBooks I'd say the screen is the most likely culprit, and the inverter cable second. But the inverter itself is almost never the problem.

This contrasts from iBooks, in which case I'd say the inverter cable is the most common cause of a dead backlight, and then the screen itself second, and then the inverter third. The inverter cables in iBooks are especially problematic for some reason.

Thanks, yeah, it's a frustrating scenario, especially when you're buying parts and guessing which component is bad. I have spare screens, so I'm lucky in that I have the luxury of testing parts. Also, swapping the screen is not hard as messing with the cabling in the hinge. I took a look at the guide in the link below and it makes it MUCH harder than it needs to be -- the screen enclosure and hinge do NOT need to be removed from the base of the machine in order to swap a MacBook screen. It's perfectly possible to swap a MacBook screen in about 15 minutes, leaving the screen casing and hinge attached.
