I would start off maxing the RAM to 16GB and look at replacing the HDD with a SSD which will add a lot of zip and if you're lean on space boost its size up.

Thanks for the answer! That’s along the line of what I was thinking. What’s the difference between the hybrid and standard ssd hard drives. I’m not looking to run an external, I figured a good internal TB ssd will be more than plenty for what I’m doing with it.

@beastybean82 - There are three drives the first is the oldest a standard Hard drive (HDD) which is a spinning platter that's more like a phonograph player. The next is a Solid State drive (SSD). But when first introduced was expensive! So a third drive showed up a Hybrid (SSHD) which is a souped up HDD by adding a small flash drive element to cache more heavily access data blocks. Basically it sat between the HDD and SSD. Apple took this idea and using two physical drives created what they call a Fusion Drive set, instead of a single device like a hybrid drive.

SSD prices have fallen so the market for Hybrid or even Fusion Drive setups is mostly gone. A single SSD drive 1TB is what I would go with. Best bang for the buck!

Have you used the C grade screens from I fix it? Those are the only available right now, I don’t necessarily need a brand new one but I don’t want one that’s beat up either.

@beastybean82 - Best to give the iFixit Store a call/email to see they can give you details on the part, they may even send you a pic or two if you ask.
