After replacing the battery in an iPhone 3GS, the phone is stuck at a pinwheel in center of a black screen.
On restart, I see the Apple logo for several minutes. The logo is replaced by a spinning pinwheel, and it goes no further.
I assume it is a connector problem. They all seemed to snap into position when I reassembled the phone.
Any suggestions?

It sounds like you may have a corrupt back up image. Try setting up the phone as new or an older back up. I've seen something similar happen to a 3G, and it was resolved by setting up the phone as a new phone (no restore from back up).

Have you tried a reset yet? Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time. The screen should go black after a few seconds. Then release both buttons once the Apple logo shows on the screen again. The other thing you can try is to place your phone in DFU mode.Open iTunes and connect your phone to the computer.Press and hold Home button and Sleep/Wake button at the same time.Continue holding both buttons for exactly 10 seconds. Then release the Sleep/Wake but keep holding the Home button until iTunes notifies you that it has "found an iPhone in Recovery Mode".You screen should be black with nothing on it. Let us know if this made any difference.

Seemed to restore OK, until I got to the step at which iTunes attempted to restore from my backup. Then I got the following message:
iTunes could not restore the iPhone "phone name" because an error occurred.
At this point the phone is back at the pinwheel.
Now I will try setting it up as a new phone, and let you know what happens.

Nope, after booting, it just goes back to the pinwheel. Does iTunes have an event log that I can check?

I hope not. I got it from iFixIt. The battery seems to work just fine.
