Intermittent Black screen, verified backlight

55" TCL has an intermittent issue powering up to a black screen. Clear indications of backlight are present. Occasionally, if left on, all operations will return to normal after awhile. Once working, it will be fine until powered off again. The delay once it fails is getting longer with time. Been getting increasingly worse for months. Too unreliable for daily use. Extended warranty covered it with a refund, but I don't want to just discard it. Any help appreciated.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

bird2brain how did you verify the backlight? do you have sound when it goes into this error? Have you had the back of it yet and what have you checked?

Did you do a hard reset on the TV software if you did and it didn’t fix it then replace the Display

by

@oldturkey03 Light leakage around the edge. Also, TCL troubleshooting includes lightly touching the screen to see ripples flight around the point of contact.

@maximilian12 Yep, soft and hard resets. I could tell by sounds an it's effect on other components that the reset was complete. Plus, After leaving it on for several hours, it spontaneously started working nominally, and I was again able to customize the settings. It almost always starts up black, and sometimes starts working with various levels of delay. Haven't tried to invade the interior, yet, but it kinda screams to me of some kind of driver board. Once it starts working, it's great until it powers off. Then, it's a crap shoot.

Well if it’s not software then unfortunately it’s a motherboard issue

bird2brain if he screen is turning black but the backlight stays on and you do have sound it is most commonly the T-con board. If you lose both audio and video it is commonly the main board. We would need to see the boards and take some measurements to verify TCL (and others) use a hodgepodge of parts and no service manuals. So it's a bit of work to trouble shoot. For now, while it still works (off and on) look around and see if you can price replacement boards.

Fantastic! Thanks for this info. It does seem to have sound. Does anyone have favorite sources for boards? I did see an option for all 3 on Amazon for about $50.

@bird2brain go inexpensive (cheap) MY preference is shopjimmy and prices are a bit higher but great service and parts (no, I don't get any kickbacks:-). Again that is my preference and for your TV I'd go anywhere for the best price.
