What's the purpose of the Conductive Adhesive and is it necessary?

I replaced the entire Back Housing for my iPhone 6 and noticed a gold plated adhesive on the flex cable of the Lightning Cable module. some of the adhesive stuck to the old housing so i decided to replace it with double sided tape. My question is what is the purpose of the adhesive and will it affect the performance of my phone? Thanks!

It is only an adhesive so the flex assembly sticks to the housing. Double sided tape will be fine.

It is for grounding and RF shielding, the performance will degrade a little bit, but in areas with decent cell coverage, the degradation is minimal.
