boot internal ssd problem

Hi everyone!

I have this A1708 for a long time. I’ve had to replace the batteries because they was inflated! Aside from this, I have another problem: for me to be able to boot from internal drive I must try 20 or 30 times to be able to recognize the drive! I’ve managed to format an external disk, installed Monterey and it boots all the time without problems, so, I think that the logic board is ok. Can someone experienced this behavior? Is it the SSD damaged or is the boot partition scrambled? After boot, it works ok and if I do several restarts it boots ok then.

Thank you for your help!

Regards,

Jorge

Using your external drive as the boot drive did you run Disk Utility Disk First-Aid to check the drive out?

@danj

Thank you for reaching out.

At the point you mention, the Disk Utility/First-Aid reports only the recovery partition (2GB?)

Well thats not good! You’ll need to create a new primary partition using Disk Utility with the unused space it should be about the difference of the recovery partition and the total space of the drive as an example a 1 TB system should have about 850 GB if not then the drive is toast!

Who’s drive are you using the original or did you upgrade it? If you did who’s and how.

Hi,

I'm using the original 500GB.

I think I'll get a new one. Any suggestions about price/quality?

Thank you!

@jorgebnunes - You have two choices, another custom Apple unit 512 GB SSD or 1 TB SSD or going with an OWC drive 1.0TB OWC AURA PRO NT

Sadly, the adapter and M.2 combo's some people have tried have not gone well as the custom data lines Apple has in their drives (and OWC) prevent excessive power loss and reliability.

by

@danj Thank you. I'll try the 512GB.

I recommend OWC

Hi guys!

Just got an OWC 1.0TB AURA PRO NT and it performs very well :-)

Thank you!
