iPhone 4 head phone jack producing sound only on right headphone?

Hey all,

So I'm having a problem with my iPhone 4 headphone jack.

It's only producing sound in the right head phone jack, and either static noise or nothing at all in the left headphone.

I've checked with several other headphones to make sure it was indeed the jack.

I've attempted using a compressed air can, paper clip with double sided tape and have had no luck.

I first noticed the problem in the car when just the right speakers were on and not the left.

Would purchasing and installing a new headphone jack fix the problem, or could there be something else involved?

All answers, comments are welcome..

Thanks!!

Is your audio output unchanged when you use a docking station? It is most likely that you will have to replace the audio jack.

Have you checked your Settings yet?

Go to Settings > General > Accessibility >

then scroll down to Hearing, under where it has LED Flash, Mono Audio, and then L/R.

Make sure its centered. If it isnt, do so. If it is, you have a obvious hardware issue. My settings where panned all the way to the Left. I thought my iPhone was having the same issue until I realized this option somehow got changed.

Good luck.

unless you were willing to open the jack emisor, what i recommend to you is to buy a new piece or if it is too expensive or difficult to find buy a broken iPhone 4 on ebay, so you would have a lot of repairing pieces. sorry i can´t speak english as good as i wish. i hope i had help you.

So I bought the headphone jack/volume/silent switch assembly here on iFixit.

Did the replacement of the audio jack, and guess what? IT DIDNT WORK!

I'm beyond &#!^^! now. Anyway.. I guess some circuity is fried... or something.

I have no clue what I can do.

I guess Ill just hold out till the iPhone 5 comes out.

I just got an iPhone 5s and the sound would only come out of the left earbud .. Somehow the settings were changed thought me touching them.. If you go into accessibility in the general setting there is a left-right control by the mono audio which was set all the way to left

Just push the end of the cord down into the jack really hard. If you find the right spot it should work on both sides. It's a little annoying, but at least it makes it work :)

Sometimes lint etc collects in the base of the phone thereby causing the charger/doc interface to send bad info to phone; The result can be a loss of an audio channel as you describe. One can search for how to clean with a cotton swab. Also (keep) clean the charger socket that connects to the phone. If cleaning is required, be sure to unplug charger from power first.

cheers,

Ben

The grime on the contacts for the one here was so thick, I used a makeshift tootpick to clean the contacts. Having come across this symptom before on this unit, I expected the sound to return to both channels immediately. However, the signal sets a software parameter. Even a phone reboot didn't reset the channel. Either reconnecting the phone to the power adapter or removing/re-connecting the headphones triggered the reset. Both channels work now.
