iPad Pro 9.7 Smart Connector Connection with Battery

Does the Smart Connector from the iPad snap into the mating connector on the battery or just sit on top and is held in place with the screwed on tab? Can’t seem to get it to snap on.

snaps into the port and should be secured with a tab and a screw.
