The Chevrolet Silverado, and its mechanically identical cousin, the GMC Sierra, is a series of full-size and heavy-duty pickup trucks manufactured by General Motors and introduced in 1999 as the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K line. The Silverado name was taken from a trim level previously used on the C/K pickup truck from 1975 through 1998.

From what I'm finding, a common fix that has worked for many and is cheap has been to replace the brake lamp switch. Its like $20. If that doesn't do it it might be an issue with the switch/buttons itself and you might have to replace that. Next time it doesn't work try tapping the brakes a bit and trying again. If it starts working then replace the brake switch.
