Why cant my brother printer print on my Windows 10 laptop?

I have a Brother Printer model MFC 235. It was working perfectly with my windows 7 laptop. However the Windows 7 machine stopped working so bought a new HP Windows 10 laptop and now it wont recognize the Brother printer. Cannot install the windows driver.

Contacted Brother and they say the driver is a Windows one and it should be automatically loaded when laptop is connected to printer.

Have followed advice from Brother website to get laptop to recognize the printer, but the install program never appears when you plug in the USB cable in any of the ports.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi @tdavie100 ,

Try installing the drivers as per p.18 of the setup guide.

Also see p.16 about uninstalling any old printer software

I followed the links you supplied. It doesn't supply the actual driver. It just points you to the instructions on how to do it or to try and get windows to automatically detect the printer. I have the CD but my new laptop has no CD tray so I cant install anything on the CD,

Can you transfer the CD data to a USB drive and then when you have it, insert the USB into the laptop and navigate to it to find the setup.exe file.

Right click on the file > properties > compatibility mode and then choose win 7 or earlier and install in Compatibility mode

Looking online your printer seems to be reasonably old and maybe not supported by Win 10 anymore.

You could always try this link for the "driver" (Driver Version: 01.00.01.01 Release Date: 2009-05-27 - not the first option as it will only scan for drivers) and see if that works. They say it is compatible with Win 10. Not sure if it will provide all the features of your model or not but you can only try

Hi,

Following your advice, I tried the Link you supplied. Couldn't add the driver from your link, but tried using Windows update and miraculously, the option for the correct printer model appeared in the list. I appear to have successfully installed the driver but still cant print unfortunately. When I try to print nothing happens and the print queue shows an unnamed error. Have tried troubleshooting but to no avail. May try your other option of transferring to a USB drive when time is available. Thanks

With the printer connected to the laptop and powered on, check that status of the printer in Device Manager.

Right click on the Windows Start button > Device Manager > Printer >(click on > symbol to expand the list if needed) >right click on Brother printer entry > properties > general Tab > Device status box.

Hi,

The general tab says "This device is working properly"

Hi:
Still having trouble printing? If so, while the previous advice given here seems sound, there may be a couple hangups that can be easily resolved.

A first thought: When you try to print a file, do you get a print preview screen? If so, make sure the Brother printer is the destination your print job is set to go to. (Your Brother should show up as a drop-down option, and you can select it as your default printer from that). It’s possible the file is currently headed for a PDF or Microsoft XPS or some other goofy option, not to your printer.

Good luck and happy printing.

Hi,

yes I get a print preview screen and I can select the Brother printer and send the job to it. But I still cant print. The status of the Brother printer icon in the principal print manage page in Control panel is: "Paused". The print job appears in the queue but gets stuck no matter what I do. Have tried cancelling and switching printer on and off and re-booting the laptop but never get past this stage.

Same happens when I Print a Test Page.

Here’s something I have done a number of times (and did so successfully just last week). Simple and worth a shot. Go to your list of printers. Remove the Brother. Then restart your computer. Upon restart, it may very well be found automatically, reinstalled and thereafter work for you. Good luck!
