Lid not closing & laptop not sitting flat

Hey guys, My 2018 mbp with Touch Bar isn’t sitting flat on a table. This started 3-4 months back. I used to a put a piece of paper underneath to stop it from being wobbly. Over time I’ve had to increase the layers of paper to still make it sit flat! It seems the laptop is getting bent more and more over time. The foot kit are intact maybe the middle of the laptop has swollen.

I have also realised that the lid isn’t closing fully and about 2-3 mm open always instead of fully sitting flat. Took it to the apple service center in our area they have told me the following:

The battery might be swollen. But the battery, trackpad, keyboard and Touch Bar are all integrated into a single unit and all of them need to be exchanged.

they would charge me Usd 450 for this repair. The old parts would be kept by them as they’re saying it’s going to be exchanged and I am not getting any new parts.

I have two main concerns:

1) is it possible only to replace the battery instead of all those parts?

2) do the apple service people keep old parts and what they are saying is it correct?

and can I keep the Mac running until I can or should I get it fixed ASAP? This is my main work laptop and parting it for a few days as well is really difficult!

Thank you

1: Yes but those are not officially approved repairs, Apple requires the whole C case assembly to be replaced as a set because it isn’t safe for them to peel off the battery from the case.

2: Yes, Apple requires all removed parts to be returned to them, or they charge double for the repair, which in this case is more than 900 dollars. This is to discourage warranty fraud.

Thank you Tom for your answer. Can you please tell what all are included in the C case?

1) aluminium top case body / chassis

2) trackpad

3) keyboard

4) battery

5) Touch Bar

Anything else?

Thanks

PS is the cost of repair correct? Because I see people saying online they paid Usd 199 for the top case to be replaced.

@nikunj93 The C case with keyboard and touch bar is one fused part, it is insanely difficult to take them apart without damage anyway.

The trackpad is sometimes replaceable, depending on the model, some have it covered under the battery so not replaceable, some have accessible screws and cables so replaceable without removing the battery.

The battery is glued down onto the top case, it is "dangerous" for Apple to remove them and not very safe for DIY disassembly either.

The price looks alright, seems close enough to what Apple would quote. It is your own responsibility to check whether they are real AASP or not.

@tomchai - This series has an easily removable Touchpad! MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar 2018 Trackpad Replacement but that doesn't help you here. The uppercase assembly Apple uses has a new one.

Hi @danj

The trackpad isn’t the issue here it’s the battery. Can the battery be replaced? It seems no from tom’s message plus what I’ve read online. I’ve also however read that apple has updated the MacBook Air retina so that only the battery can be replaced. I’m not sure if my 2018 Touch Bar model supports the battery only repair. Would be great if anyone can throw some light to it.

Thanks

@nikunj93 No it does not, the battery on your model is glued down hard.
