What is the black pad/foil behind battery?

As shown in the Google Pixel XL Battery replacement guide, there is a black pad/foil between the battery and the body of the phone. It can be seen in the attached image.

What is this pad/foil? I accidentally put a rip in it while removing some adhesive from the phone’s body.

Is this something I should be concerned about?

Looks like some thermal management/shielding to me. You will be fine with a rip in it!
