Error 29 after trying to restore

After about a month of my iPhone 3GS consistently turning itself off and whilst on charge it finally turned itself off and wouldn't turn on again. I tried to put it in DFU mode but I got the "connect to iTunes " logo. So I pluged my phone into my pc and stated iTunes I then got a message to tell me my phone was in recovery mode and to restore and update, which I did. I am using iTunes 10 and I assume it is trying to put iOS 5 onto my phone. It goes through extracting software then installs software then installs firmware and just after it apparently install the firmware I get an error 29. After a bit of research into this error I decide to change the battery. I purchase a battery from Amazon with serial number APN 616-0435 which apparently is the fix for the error but I still get the same error. Can somebody help please

try a battery with the same apn as original one, it's possible to get a bad battery as they can sit on shelves for a while..or order another 0435 from a vendor with good feedback. Restore from backup and not update?

thanks pollytinto for your answer. my girlfriend has an iphone 3gs exactly the same as mine as we got them at the same timed and i have swapped the battery from hers into mine which has the same apn but to no avail. can you suggest any vendors for a good battery? and unfortunatley i dont have any back ups as the pc which i did back up my iphone has died !

I'm in the uk. I'd try ifixit..excellent aftersales service! put your old battery in should get rid of the error 29 and rebooting. You may not have tightened screws enough over battery (near the "don't remove" sticker)

i am also in the uk. if i ordered a battery from ifixit would it come from the usa?

also it was the old battery that was the problem ..... i think?

go on ebay, check out the feedback/% I haven't bought a 3GS battery for a while otherwise I'd recommend the person I bought from last as there have been no problems with those batteries! I do know that I didn't get an 0435 either..but it still worked fine. this looks like a fairly good store..bought here before for 3G battery/screens.

yes ifixit does ship to UK..am only suggesting ebay as it's a whole lot quicker. It's a bit tricky this error 29 business...maybe you have received a duff battery. It's not jailbroken or anything, no recent downloads of apps? what happens if you put your board in your girlfriends phone? I know you swapped the battery but it can also be the dock I think on this error..
