Apple requires changing the earspeaker and the display simultaneously?

Hi there,

So I’m about to try and change the earspeaker of my Iphone 8, but after having read the guide on how to do this on this website, and watching videos of people changing the earspeaker, I’m becoming a little bit worried that I might not be able to complete the repair with my level of skill, which is more or less abysmal.

So I checked with various third party repair shops around town, and got a couple of suggestions on how much they charge for changing the earspeaker. The prices varied somewhat, but none were particularly eregious, except the one I got from a repair shop which were authorized by Apple. They charged around 36 dollars for cleaning the earspeaker and phone, but charged a whopping 215 dollars for changing the earspeaker. The reason for why they charged this much, they told me, is that they also had to change the entire display at the same time, thus the cost and installation of the display had to be included in their fee.

I asked them why they had to change the display as well, but they couldn’t give me an answer other than that this is what they do as a repair shop authorized by Apple. So I thought to ask you guys what Apple’s reasoning is for necessitating changing the display as well as the earspeaker? If I took on the authorized shop’s offer, I would get a 3 month warranty on their repair, which seems like too short a warranty to justify the steep price?

Thanks in advance!

There is a difference between the front flex assembly and the speaker. It is extremely rare for the ear speaker to become faulty so I gather the problem is the front flex assembly which includes the camera.

The reason the apple authorised repair shop charges that much is because for one they are not allowed to open the phone. They will have to send it to apple that has not got the experience and technical knowledge to just replace the front flex assembly. Instead they will replace the entire screen which has everything already assembled including a new home button. They will then connect it to their pairing machine to pair the home button and front camera, they then send it back to the authorised repair shop.

Depending on the quality of the replacement part will determine the cost that the third party shops will charge. I have found with the 8 series you are better off replacing the front flex assembly with an original, pulled from another phone.

Hi Alexander,

So im not super familiar with iphones when it comes to when they started doing the serialization of components but i do know on the newer phones you cannot swap parts on a whim. the new iphone 12 you cant change the camera at all. itll basically render the camera useless ( the new one)

theres a video from this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY7DtKMB...

where he tears down 2 EXACT iphones and swaps parts from one to the other and they do not work! its all apart of the right to repair movement happening. anyway. i wouldnt put it past apple to do this on the iphone 8 but its something theyve started to do more recently. id say call other repair shops and see what they say about it also. im sure one of the other more experienced guys on this forum would be able to help a bit more.
