Upgrade iMac 5K Mid 2015 CPU

I have an iMac 5K Mid 2015 which now mounts an Intel i5. Since I’m going to upgrade it with an SSD, I’m wondering whether I could upgrade the CPU too.

According to the iMac spec sheet the CPU is “mounted on a LGA 1150 socket and can be physically upgraded with a compatible processor with a maximum TDP of 88 W or less”.

I found that Intel i7-4790 and i7-4790K are both compatible with the 1150 socket and have a TDP of 84W, the former, and 88W, the latter.

I read some threads online and It’s not clear to me if the CPU is soldered to the motherboard or not, hence making the upgrade impossible.

Anyone has opened down this specific iMac and tried the upgrade?

Thank you,

I found the answer within the comments section.

Someone succeeded in upgrading the cpu from an Intel i5-4590 to an Intel i7-4790K!

Hi,

The i7-6700K works, I recommend it.

Operating temps: 40-55 at idle, and 85-99 (rendering).

I am very happy with the CPU upgrade ( i5-5600 3.2Ghz was mine).

Hi Adam,

Thank you for the answer.

From what I read Late 2015 iMacs mounted an i5-6500 on a LGA 1151 socket. Are you sure yours is a Mid 2015, and not a Late 2015, iMac?
