You people aren't understanding the problem. I bought my girl some lightning wired apple earbuds but she has to turn on Bluetooth to use them. It makes no sense.

@Jonathan Moose - That just doesn't make sense! I think you'll need to visit an Apple store to have them figure out why.

I have the same problem. I bought wired EarPods and they will not work on my phone without turning on Bluetooth. It makes no sense. My last EarPods just plugged into the lightning port and I was good to go. Now I can’t find any pairs of wired earbuds for my iPhone that don’t require Bluetooth to work. What’s the point of having the wire?? I don’t want to use Bluetooth and deal with the radiation that comes from that. That’s why I got wired ear buds. So frustrating!!!

Several reddit threads address this. I cannot vouch for them but apparently they are not Apple products or Mifi.

QUOTE:

The reason behind this is in order to use the lightning jack on iPhones your device must have a special chip made by Apple that has a software key in it. In order to get this chip you need to get your accessory approved by Apple which costs a ton of money to get Apple certified. This chip is also required if you want to use Bluetooth classic. So these earbuds probably are using BLE to talk to your iphone.

I suspect they may be more Amazon counterfeits.

Check out the reddit threads. I searched with

An ear pods specially design for wireless use and works on blue tooth technology. So, if you don’t have blue tooth feature in your device then won’t connect or use your ear pods.

Wired ear pods go by the same name and this confuses things.

Sometimes Airpods get called Earpods

You are most likely not using real earpods because all fake earpods connect through Bluetooth to bypass apple's MFI standard as far as I know.
