SSD as external storage?

Hello-

I bought a Crucial 1 TB v2 SSD to replace the drive in my late 2013 iMac. I never did it and now I’m planning to buy a new M1 Mini. Will I be able to use the 1TB SSD for external storage? My 1TB iMac is pretty much full and I don’t want to buy a bigger Mini if I don’t have to. I assume if this is possible, I’ll need an enclosure for it, yes?

Thanks,

CJ Camp

@nimbleboy - Crucial makes quite a few different SSD’s. I’m assuming you have a 2.5” SATA drive as the M.2 PCIe SSD’s won’t work without an adapter and I don’t recommend them in iMac’s.

So you’ll need a case to hold your 2.5” SATA drive. Something like this will work ORICO 2.5 Hard Drive Enclosure, USB C 3.1 to SATA External Hard Drive SSD Enclosure for 9.5/7mm SATA III SSD HDD

Hey CJ,

Yeah, you can use a product like this: https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Aluminum-Encl... to use the old drive as an external drive. Sadly, because it’ll be over USB, you won’t have the same data read/write speeds, but it should still be pretty quick because it’s USB 3.0.
