Why is my laptop not booting up correctly?

My laptop is an Acer E1-572P. I was watching a movie, and the screen just went black. Now when I press the power button, I get this error message:

:(

Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We’re just collecting some info, and then we’ll restart for you.

Then for less than half a second, a second part of the message appears as follows:

(0% complete)

If you’d like to know more, you can search online later for this error: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

Then the entire screen goes black again, and the process restarts. I have no idea what to do, and I need this laptop to be intact because it has all my documents on it. I don’t have a backup anywhere.

May be a failing drive, especially since it uses a traditional hard drive. A lot of these laptop drives have issues 3-4 issues in, and begin to poorly age at 5+ years old simply due to wear and tear. Inaccessible boot device errors usually point to a tired hard drive.

See if you can open it and find out who makes the drive, and check for a manufacturer diagnostic tool. If they have one and it’s still not working right you need a new drive. HOWEVER, make a backup first just in case the diagnostics kill the drive (yes, it happens).

If you find the drive has an issue, seriously consider a 256 or 512GB SSD. They’re cheap enough putting another spinning drive makes no sense.
