Apple changes things between the early and late 2013 series!

The Early 2013 shares the same display as the 2012 model and the Late 2013 shares the same screen with the 2014 model 13” MacBook Pro Retina Complete Display (L13/14), Apple P/N 661-8153

The older one 13” MacBook Pro Retina Complete Display (12/E13), Apple P/N 661-7014 would not fit or work in your system!

As far as brightness control that is all within the logic board circuitry. Here’s a good primer LED 101: How do dimmable LEDs work? This is how all computer display LED backlights work!
