Firmware won't update so I can't install anything newer than Yosemite

I have a problem. This MacBook needs a newer firmware and it just wont boot from internal ssd (replaced) and the firmware is from 2015. The new firmware included with El Cap and newer doesn’t install. It fails to verify the firmware or fails to update it. Is there anything I can do for this poor MacBook

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

You’ll need to setup a bootable OS installer USB thumb drive. Download from another Mac the installer from here How to get old versions of macOS

I would recommend going with Mojave, follow this guide to create the How to create a bootable macOS Mojave installer drive

@danj I've tried Mojave and Sierra and High Sierra. It all fails at updating the firmware. I'm using a third party ssd and it's not detected at all. I'm ordering an actual apple ssd. Is there a way to manually flash the firmware from an external drive? I did actually get El Cap to install though but it didn't update the firmware

@coreycusick - That does put a wrinkle into it ;-{

Time for a real Apple SSD
