New ssd adapter cable for formatting question

“I recently purchased the crucial 500 GB SSD upgrade kit for my mid 2012 MacBook Pro. Kit comes with the ssd and a storage device with usb cable. It appears that in order to format my ssd I will need a sata to USB adapter cable. Is that correct? The storage device in the kit does not contain the feature required to mount the ssd.” If I need the sata to USB adapter, where can I find one? Crucial shows their inventory as out of stock

Answer this question I have this problem too

The enclosure is a SATA to USB case to hold your drive. You don’t need anything else.

Now the question is is the glass have full or half empty? Basically you can put your new SSD within it or you can take your current internal drive and place it in the case. Either way will work! I prefer taking your current drive out method, then using either internet recovery or using a bootable OS installer USB thumb drive install a fresh OS onto the new drive. Then at the end of the OS install connect the extern case with your older drive and use the transfer option (Migration Assistant) to move over your user accounts, apps and any data you want to bring over. That way you purge any old information held in your OS.
