Hi,

Not sure what you mean by “…completely disconnect the lock, not cutting any wires…” but if you mean just removing it from where it is fixed and leaving it dangling then if you are having issues with the lock then they may still occur and affect the operation of the washer.

Perhaps a better option is to bypass the lock circuit by modifying the lock wiring but the model number of the washer would have to be known as the wiring is not the same for all washers.

Doing this would also prove the problem either into the lock itself or back into the lock operating circuit i.e. if it works OK then it is the lock, if not then it is the lock operating circuit and further testing would be required to find the problem.

I would just unplug the wires from the main board for the control panel. I’ve also looked into buying a new switch as well

Hi @ amanda weide

Unplugging the wires wouldn't work because there is a switch in the lock that is operated when the control board operates the lock and this sends a signal back to the control board that the lid is locked and to start the wash cycle.

By bypassing the lid lock by altering the wiring you are fooling the control board that the lid is locked when obviously it isn't. As I said though the wiring is not all the same so the model number is required so the wiring diagram can be found and then it will be known how to reconnect the wires etc.

Sometimes the "tech sheet" which usually has a wiring diagram for the washer is located in a plastic sleeve, on the inside between the tub and the front of the washer, maybe worth a look if it is there or maybe anywhere else on the inside of the washer.

Safer and easier option is to replace the lock.

Just search online for "Whirlpool (insert full model number of washer) parts" to find suppliers that suit you.
