MBP charging very slowly and registers 61W charger as 12W, any help?

Hi

My 2016 MBP has had no issues until one morning it would not recognise charger. It had ran out of charge overnight so I had v. limited options as it would not turn on. Took to local computer guy, unsure what magic they did, and it turned back on again.

However, it is charging very slowly and sometimes drains if I try to use it when plugged in. It did say ‘service recommended’ but SMC reset has fixed this. Also, the 61W original apple charger is being shown as 12W on coconut battery (and the Mac software), the ‘charging with’ ranges from about 0.18watts to 6.0watts.

Is this a common problem? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Does it display the same info on both USB ports?

Yep, I have also tried 3 different cables (2 apple ones, 1 came with a non-apple monitor)

There is a couple of issues here:

Are you using the correct charging cable that came with your Apple charger? Apple had a recall on the cable Apple Recalls Some MacBook USB-C Cables Because Of Intermittent Charging Flaw

There is also a recall on the battery: 13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) Battery Replacement Program as well as one for the SSD 13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) Solid-State Drive Service Program See if they apply to you.

You also appear to have run your battery down Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks Your battery is very close to the end and if doesn’t meet the requirements for the free battery I would replace it ASAP.

Unfortunately it isn't valid for any of these, but thank you for suggesting. It has been charged with the original apple cable, I recently (after the charging issues started) started using a newer apple usb-c cable.

The battery, although close to the 1,000 cycles, works completely fine when charged and doesn't run down any faster than I would expect given its age and heavy use- this made me think the battery isn't the issue at the moment (?) and therefore I am hesitant to pay for a replacement battery...

Thanks

I would replace the battery if you've already tried a new Apple cable. There is some logic within the battery which could be a factor here.
