A1398 - New Simplo battery - System dead after 3 days.

This is sounding awfully similar to what happened here: I changed my A1398 battery last week, with the iFixit kit

Everything went well then 3 days later the computer suddenly shuts down and stays dead. The battery is charging, a SMC reset shows the LED changing colour, it just won’t turn on. Disconnecting the battery doesn’t help.

I have to wait a few hours before being able to power it on again, only to see it die again after a couple minutes.

Would that be the battery that killed the logic board? I’m using an original magsafe charger.

Edit: I managed to boot it long enough to run CoconutBattery, before it died again. Actually a Simplo battery

Answer this question I have this problem too

I spun your issue to a new question as its not the same problem.

If you can see if you can get a snapshot of CoconutBattery so we can see what's happening. CoconutBattery post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

Hi Dan and thank you for splitting my comment, sorry if it was not relevant to the other question.

I just added a few screenshots of what CoconutBattery shows

I now have access to an oscilloscope, and discovered voltage spikes when disconnecting and reconnecting, and expect similar when waking from sleep. My Mac's GPU died after waking from sleep on battery.

The original battery PCB is labelled Compeq, and includes a TI BQ20Z45 gas gauge chip. It idles at 2V, and "wakes up" by handshaking. The voltage spikes go up to 4.5V.

The fake battery PCB has an chip labelled A2169 A37061O01F instead of a TI. It's apparently a knockoff gas gauge. That battery idles at 12 V.

There's a third battery, labelled Dynapack, currently in my computer. I replaced the logic board, and the seller offered me a top case and battery for an extra $50. The Dynapack battery idles at 6.75V.

I tried moving the Compeq PCB from the known good (but swollen) battery to the new "Simplo" cells. It triggered an undervoltage PF flag, and I don't know the unseal code, to use Charlie Miller's code to clear the PF permanent failure. Thanks for warning me that iFixit batteries are also "Simplo".

I don’t see a battery issue here, so that’s good! As you didn’t have the system under charge I can’t tell you what’s happening with the charging logic. Allow the systems charge to drop below 60% and then plug in your charger give it a few minutes to start the charging cycle and take a second snapshot.

As to the sudden shutdown, You’ll need to look deeper using the onboard diagnostics for starters: Restart the system and pressing the D key to enter. Did you get any errors?

Problem is once the system powers up, I have maybe 3 or 4 minutes of uptime before it suddenly shuts down so draining the battery is not an immediate option. This is happening with our without the power supply.

Once the system shuts down, it stays dead for a few hours, maybe 4 or 5. No way to power it up again, with or without charger, with or without battery. Feels like a cap somewhere needs to discharge completely before being able to power the board again

The Apple diagnostics was the first thing I ran, and it came up clean.

Well... I think that nails it your logic board has a problem ;-{

As to what, it could be a bad cap, it could also be a cold solder joint or chip failure. This will take a bit of work to troubleshoot. You'll need to get ahold of the schematics and boardview drawings and carefully measure the power rails from the battery though to the different parts of the logic board.

Or... Find someone with the skills and tools to fix your logic board

Or... Just replace it!

Yep, seems like something's cooked on the board. What I'd love to know is if it's coming from that new battery. And that's the reason why I originally commented on the other thread, wondering if I'm the only one

Simplo batteries breaking logic boards?

by

@smichaux - Sorry no, the battery won't do this.
