Macbook Pro MId 2015 - went for a clean install after some startup issues, but The internal SDD does not mount once I get to internet Recovery and OSX install. Doesn’t mount in Disk utility either.

Once in Target disk mode the disk mounts perfectly on a 2nd identical MBP.

I bought a new SDD and the same problem persists, fine in target disk mode but I am unable to install OSX.

Any ideas?

Update (11/24/2020)

Pretty sure I have wiped it clean - disk utility - erase a Mac OS journaled, GUID

did I miss something here?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Which model do you have the 13" or 15"?

What is the current version of macOS on your system and what are you trying to install?

by

15"

Had Catalina and all was well, I have an identical MPB which runs Catalina too.

The SDD is now completely wiped, as I thought that was the way to go. before wiping it mounted fine in Target Disk mode, as it does now - but If Igo to install Catalina (or previous OSX's) the SSD doesnt show on in install.

I’m suspecting you hadn’t fully wiped the drive.

Apple has altered its new file system five times now! So you can encounter issues if you don’t delete all of the partitions and containers. You’ll need to use Disk Utility from an external bootable drive or via Target Disk Mode from your other system. create a new GUID/HFS+ volume

Then run the installer. So far I’ve found setting up HFS+ is better than APFS allowing the installer to modify it.

Thanks for your help. I tried again wiping, but still same issue. I can mount in target disk to wipe the driv, - but when I restart into internet rovery - I get to the installer and no disk shows.

What do you see in Disk Utility in Internet Recovery Mode?

by

@eggonjam - Lets get a snapshot of Disk Utility, click on the top left view icon make sure its set for Show All Devices. Then click on your drive icon the left and expand the sections and snap a shot at each level and post them here for us to see Adding images to an existing question.

So I've uploaded 4 pics. 2 from disk utility in internet recovery and 2 from mounting in target disk mode.

Well, it does appear the drive is clean! So I can't see why it won't allow you to install the OS either via Internet recovery or via your other system in target disk mode.

There is some issues with Big Sur! One large nasty is bricking some 13" systems Big Sur from Catalina completely failed mid-cycle bricking my Mac Could this be your issue as well?
