Freezer & Frig Not Cold Enough

Model RFG237 AAWP. Setting freezer to 0 and frig to 34 yields measured temps of ~32 in freezer and ~42 in frig. Or sometimes ~40 in freezer and ~55 in frig.

Repair service advises replace “inverter board.” Same repair service advised: “can’t get this running for you today,” even though the machine was in fact running, and producing [inadequate] cooling as noted.

I note frequent authoritative commentary here to the effect that the inverter is seldom the problem: “The temperature control board provides the voltage to the fan motors and compressor. These boards are often misdiagnosed. Check all other components to be certain this is the cause of the problem.”

The thermistor monitors the refrigerator temperature and sends the temperature reading to the control board. The control board regulates power to the compressor and evaporator fan based on the thermistor readings. If the thermistor is defective, the compressor and evaporator fan may not run when necessary. As a result, the refrigerator will not be cold enough. To determine if the thermistor is defective, test it with a multimeter. The thermistor resistance should change in conjunction with the refrigerator temperature. If the thermistor resistance does not change, or the thermistor does not have continuity, replace the thermistor.

Thank you, Mayer. The appliance has a digital display on the door that reports frig and freezer temp, or so says the owner’s manual:

”Freezer Temp ( 1 ) indicates the current freezer temperature. Fridge Temp ( 2 ) indicates the current refrigerator temperature”.

Can I rely on that display to tell me whether thermistor is sending bad information to control board? That is, if thermistor is sending reasonable temps (~0 and ~40) to control board, it should also be sending those temps to digital display, even though false. Does that make sense?

Hi @jenn1995 ,

Here’s the section of the service manual that shows how to place the refrigerator in the “self diagnostic function in normal mode”.

It should display an error code if there is one, the meaning of which is explained on the following pages. There are also troubleshooting flowcharts further on in the manual which describe how to test for the various error codes.

Hopefully this is of some help.
