Convert From US to Europe

Hello -

I have an Onkyo TX-NR535 AV receiver. I am moving from the US to Europe and want to purchase the appropriate conversion device so I can listen to my records on my Audio Technica AT-LP60. Can anyone quickly provide me with what I would need to purchase to appropriately convert the voltage and hz?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

@mei7f the safest way would be to purchase a 220V to 110V step down transformer that you then use to supply the proper power for your receiver. It will lower the European voltage to the 110V your receiver will need.

You receiver’s power supply is listed at 380W so your down transformer should at least supply that. Something like this would be plenty. Of course you can always check places like this for more choices.

Hi @mei7f ,

Just to add that it may also depend on the design of the receiver whether the step down transformer also has to be one that converts the frequency as well. Most EU countries power supplies are 230V AC 50Hz whereas the USA is 120V AC 60Hz and the cheaper end step down transformers do not convert the frequency as well but simply convert the voltage at the same frequency as the supplied voltage frequency.

This could mean that the receiver will not get the voltage level required and may not work correctly. Just something to be aware of it it doesn't seem to work properly.

As you can see in this list (look for the ones that mention frequency as well) they are a lot more expensive to buy.

Again this is only if there are problems with the other type. it may be that there won't be, it does depend on the device itself. e.g. have found that certain USA kitchen food mixers specify in their user manual that they will only work at 60Hz and not 50Hz)

This is from the user manual for the receiver. Check what it says on the information label on the receiver itself

Power Supply

AC 120 V, 60 Hz (North American and Taiwanese)

AC 230 V, 50 Hz (European, Australian and British)

AC 220 - 240 V, 50/60 Hz (Others)

Hi -

@oldturkey03 thank you so much!

I bought this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PGJ... Which looks like it converts what I need and brings it down on the frequency. Also, I know my AV receiver maz is 380W, but I won’t be outfitting an in house sound system. This is primarily for my record player use. Do you think this suffices, or should I get one that is 1000W?

Just in case, I also bought this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JJS...

I would just plan to purchase a 12 volt battery for hook up. Creative, but should work.

I think

@mei7f yes that should work. Enjoy your stay in the EU :-)
