System Fan error(9B) on HP probook

Hi,

i have a HP probook 480 G3 and have an issue with a fan not working or shall I say the error message.

i took the laptop apart and the fan is clean and spins with no issues. However, the error persists.

checked the charger and it’s all good. Tried hard reset but still no luck. The heat sink has a fresh thermal paste.

When the laptop is turned on, fan spins as normal for few seconds and then it stops.

I’ve tried whatever I could find online but nothing worked? Surely it can’t be fan, can it?

Any idea where to go to go from here?

Hi @tomtom235 ,

Please verify the model number of the laptop?

Searching the HP website shows only ProBook G3 laptop models, 430, 446, 450, 455 470, 640 and x360-11, no 480.

If the fan has 3 wires it has a sensor on the 3rd wire (not the red or black wires) usually connected through to the black wire in the fan.

Replacing the fan is most probably the quickest way to determine where the problem is. Either it is the fan or it is on the motherboard

Hi @tomtom235,

Here's the fan part# 826379-001.

This was found in the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the laptop. (see p.61)

If you decide to replace the fan first, search online using the "part number only" in your browser, to find suppliers.

The alternative is to search online for "(insert motherboard 'board number') schematics" to hopefully find the schematics for the motherboard so that you can track the fan circuit back from the fan to see where it goes and then check the components in the path.

The board number is printed on the motherboard.
