Defrost heaters not working

My defrosting system Ices up and doesn't melt down.

What could be the problem but then I tested the heaters and thermostat they cdnt pass through continuity test but rather bring up a reading of 433 reading

What could that mean

Then I also need help finding the timer of a RT31FAREDSA model Samsung double door fridge dual Inverter

Hi,

What is the full model number of the freezer?

Did you measure the heater element and the thermostat, individually and in isolation i.e. disconnected from the wire harness and the meter probes connected directly to the component's connection terminals?

Normally for a good heater element the resistance measurement is 20-50 Ohms. Don't know about the thermostat.

Depending on the specifications of your meter a resistance measurement of 433 Ohms may be above the limit where the continuity test works as continuity is usually just a quick test to prove that the wire/switch etc is OK and it is normally only a very low resistance <1 Ohm.

Also what component measured 433 Ohms? That's definitely too high for a heater element.

I appreciate, actually what I was working on was a fridge.

So the thermostat and the heaters were connected together and had two brown wire connected on either end, so I disconnected them from where they receive power and I set my multimeter to a ×1(where a continuity beep is always heard) so I measured (as they were still together) and that reading of 433 is wat I saw

So I got confused and I dnt know what is which

But you have said that that reading is really to high so I guess it's a faulty heater but then what about the thermostat.

Plus I failed to locate the timer of the fridge

Please verify that the model number is correct?

If you measured the heater by itself and got that reading it is too high.

If the thermostat is a thermistor type then its' resistance will vary with temperature.

It might be one step at a time.

See my comment above about the model number. Usually there aren't that many letters in a model number

OK I finally located your model (sorry about doubting the number)

It appears that it is a model for Africa.

There don't seem to be any parts suppliers or any other information e.g. service manuals that I can find online so you may have to contact Samsung, in your location and ask about where to obtain parts and their availability.

As I said, one step at a time.

If the heater solves the problem all well and good. You can verify the heater before installation by testing it to see what its' resistance is. If it is what I said then you know at least that the original is faulty.

With most refrigerators, they go into auto defrost mode once every 8-11 hours. During this time the compressor and evap fan are turned off and the temp in the freezer is allowed to rise to 0 deg. C to melt any ice which drains away to the evap pan under the refrigerator cabinet . The melting process is sped up by turning on the defrost heater.

When the temp reaches 0 deg. C the defrost thermostat operates to end the cycle by signalling the control board to turn off the heater and to restart the compressor and evap fan.

This whole process takes about 20-25 minutes and is repeated every 8-11 hours.

The timer is part of the control board

I still have one question though

Where can I find the timer of this very refrigerator because I tried behind the kick plate(was tightly enclosed) and behind the compressor compantement nothing was there

You have to find the main control board.

It won't be a separate adjustable timer as you know it.

It will be in the circuitry contained on the main control board. These days most probably controlled by embedded software in an IC.

As I suggested check if the compressor does turn off for the length of time and not just for a shorter time because the set temp has been reached.

It's a pity that there is no service manual available because I've found with a lot of Samsung refrigerators that you can force the fridge into the defrost mode to test that all the functions are working. Without it all you can do is observe and test what you can. In this case only the heater and perhaps any sensors located in the freezer compartment near the evaporator unit.

If the compressor is never stopped for at least 15-20 minutes (and unfortunately this may happen at any time, if you don't know when it occurred last e.g. middle of the night) then there is a problem with the control board.
