Im not sure what may be causing this but what has worked for me before is, first hold down the center button then the menu button and hold both until an apple appears on the screen.

Hope this works for you

Mine does the same. Everything else works ok. Resetting it makes no difference. I am letting it "die" and then going to recharge it as this was advice given elsewhere.

Another idea is to connect to a computer and let itunes (spytunes!) update the software. Personally I hate itunes as it is a marketing tool. I always add and remove stuff manually.

A useful hint to enable you to save files from your Nano onto a different computer in an emergency is that earlier nanos will show as external hard drives on My Computer when plugged in via USB with itunes not auto started. There will be a hidden folder (select show hidden files via Folder Options) called ipod control. Select Music folder (also hidden) and there will be folders named F00 etc. All your mp3 files will be available to save as renamed files (abcd, hfgd etc.).

In an emergency you can copy the whole folder to your computer, restore your ipod to default and then overwrite the new folders, that the reset creates, with it to restore all your files.

By selecting "details" in folder view you should be able to identify which track is which, or just play them.

The Touch models do not allow this and often just show as a camera on My Computer.
