Can the late 2009 iMac be upgraded with the 6770 or 6790?

Can the late 2009 27” iMac be upgraded with the 6770 or 6790?

my 4850 is still going strong, but I need more horsepower for editing video, the consideration is to buy a $200-300 new Radeon replacement if it will work (macsales says the 2009 has video “part of the system” but every video I see on 2009 is fully replaceable).

Anyone know?

Yes, your model has a removable MXM GPU board so it is possible to swap it out. But, you will need to stick with an Apple board as they have custom firmware.

  • AMD Radeon HD 6970, 1GB - Apple P/N 661-5968
  • AMD Radeon HD 6970, 2GB - Apple P/N 661-5969

Now the bad part… Depending on your App you may not see any improvement! Some apps leverage the CPU more so than the GPU for rendering. This series comes in two versions as it was a transitional model moving from Intel’s Core 2 Duo to the newer i Series. So you do want to have one of the iSeries CPU’s and if you don’t have the i7 version {2.8 GHz Core i7 (I7-860)} I would strongly recommend you do this as well as boost your system to at least 16 GB.
