Hi,

Just verifying that you pressed Fn +F8 (I think) to toggle between laptop screen only, external monitor only and both on together?

Try shining a torch at an angle close to the laptop screen and check if you can detect an image at all when the laptop is on. It will be very faint if it is there so try this in a darkened room.

If you can see an image then there is a screen backlight problem

This could be caused by a faulty display inverter, a faulty inverter cable connection, or a faulty CCFL lamp.

Here’s a link to the service manual for the laptop.

Scroll to p.25/73 (pdf page numbering) to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the E5500 display inverter so that you can check the connections etc.

If it is determined that the inverter board is faulty, inverter boards are available online, just search for Dell Latitude E5500 CCFL LCD Backlight Inverter Board to get results for suppliers.

If it is determined that the CCFL lamp is faulty, replacement lamps are available online. Just search for Dell latitude E5500 backlight lamp to get results for suppliers.

If you can’t see an image and since the screen is black then there is either a problem with the LVDS cable (damaged in the hinge area perhaps), the LVDS cable connection (at either end)from the motherboard to the display or the motherboard.

@Sheri Penny Luedke ,

If you're getting a display on an external monitor only then it means there is a problem with the laptop's display.

In the answer above it shows how to check for what may be the problem

Usually there is a HDD light as well but work on the display problem first as the laptop is working with an external display so the HDD (or SSD) is working

Did you try testing the laptop display using a torch or try using the Fn +F8 keys to toggle the displays, you didn't say?

If so what was the result?
