Follow that link to take front screens off, turn screens over so you're looking at the back of the home button. You should see 2 very small gold prongs, these get bent flat from use (why you need to press hard now) use a flathead screwdriver to GENTLY lift them up to 45•. Replacing the button won't change a thing... You may need to change the flex under it ($1-3) easy fix

The home button is part of the front panel assembly.

You can get the front panel assembly apart from the rest of the iPhone by following this tutorial:

iPhone 3G Front Panel Assembly Replacement

After you have done that try playing with the connectors around the home button, and purchase a iPhone 3G home button from another site if you believe it needs replacing.
