I bought a new slim PS2 and it doesn’t read any discs. The discs do spin but it keeps making a grinding a noise and pops up “the disc could not be read” all the time. What is wrong with it?

I'll try to find the answer.
So I found this video and I tested it on my PS2 (I have the same problem with my PS2 slim…) and it fixed the problem. Hope this helps!

Hey I found that if you remove this pad from the PS2 it can then read the disk. It solved my problem. Hope this helps
(I couldn't figure out how to post a picture of it so sorry for sending you somewhere else…)
Try to disassemble it and clean up laser or buy new laser for it.
