Upgrade to i7 4770S?

Hi!

I got an iMac 27 2013 model. It got the i5 processor. I got an i7 4770S which i know is used in the 21.5’ 2013 models.

Do you guys think I can use it in the 27 inch variant? I know the 27 variant accepts the i7 4771 but neither the i7 4770 or the 4770k, should the S variant work if it’s used in the 21.5 inch?

The Late 2013 27” came in three versions iMac14,2

  • 3.2 GHz Core i5 (I5-4570)
  • 3.4 GHz Core i5 (I5-4670)
  • 3.5 GHz Core i7 (I7-4771)

Your systems BIOS (EFI) is designed to support one of these three CPU’s. The 4770S might work I just don’t know.

Do keep in mind its running at a lower clock 3.1 GHz when installed in the 21.5” system. It might not run at this clocking in your 27” model.

Hello, I personally have installed several i7-4770 CPU on 27” late 2013 iMac and it work flawlessly. Now i´m wondering if the “S” variant would do it too (that is why i got here) and it think they are.
So I don’t have a precise answer for your specific question, but at least i got you close to it, as i mentioned I have done the 4770 upgrade successfully. Now i’m about to know the results when i receive the 4770s I just purchased.

Why are you going with the 4770S version if you already have the 4770 installed?

Intel Core i7-4770S Processor TDP - 65 W

Intel Core i7-4770 Processor TDP - 84 W

The 4770S is really for the smaller system like the 21.5" iMac as its power and cooling is much less.
