Hi,

The brake light switch which is operated by the brake pedal may be loose or faulty.

Here’s the procedure which shows how to check the brake pedal adjustment. It shows the switch.

Try disconnecting the wires from the brake light switch and check if the brake lights turns off.

If they do then there is a problem with the switch.

If they don’t then there is a problem with the wires from the switch to the brake light failure sensor, the sensor itself or other circuits in the car such as trailer light wiring, cruise control etc.

Here are some images which show the brake switch and the wiring diagram for the brake lights which may help.

Don’t know your car but do you also get a brake warning light in the dashboard instrument panel by any chance?

If so check that the level of the brake fluid in the brake master cylinder is OK.

It is your brake sensor you need a new one not expense at all. Around 50 to 100 for truck sensor plus installation. Just happened to

The brake lights use a break pedal position switch, it's a plunger that when extended, turns the break on, and when pushed on will turn the breaks off. Likely the issue is that the plastic plug on your break pedal that makes contact with the break pedal position switch, has crumbled due to time/age/heat. Replace the plug with a plastic body panel clip.

It's either the brake pedal stop pad or the brake light switch itself. The parts cost between 10-20$. A shop will probably charge an hour labor to install if you don't know anyone that can do it for you.

There is a brake light switch behind the brake pedal. Sometimes it gets stuck and needs to be replaced. Happened in my 2001 Pontiac grand am.
