Hi @gordol ,

Here’s a link to the Inspiron 13 5000 Series 2-in-1 Service Manual

The keyboard is part of the palmrest assembly which means that you’ll nearly have to completely dis-assemble the laptop to get to it.

Scroll to p.81 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove / replace the palmrest assembly and keyboard.

Don’t know with your model but on other laptops where the keyboard is part of the assembly, if you wish to replace the keyboard only, you’ll find that the keyboard is permanently attached and has to be literally snipped off the palmrest and a new keyboard glued back into place.

Here’s a link that may be of some help in that regard.

Thank you. That is what I was looking for, but could not find.

The replacement keyboard I got off of Newegg claims to be for this and other 13-5xxx models, and appears to screw in. We'll see. Right now, I'm stuck on stripped screw heads on two of the screws that hold the motherboard on. Dell torqued them down too tight. I have a set of precision extractors on the way from iFixIt.

Follow these steps:

  1. Unscrew the screws from the backside of your laptop.
  2. Remove the backside of the laptop.
  3. Pop-out the keyboard using a spatula (or a similar instrument) from the corners.
  4. Replace the keyboard.
  5. Follow the above steps backward from step 3.

Hope this helps!

Regards.

Hi @judysmith712 ,

You're braver than me working inside a laptop without disconnecting the battery first ;-)

Oh I forgot to mention that. Sorry. My bad.

Um, there's a motherboard, battery and hard drive between the back case and keyboard.
