When I put a charged battery in my Macbook, the screen lights up (white). But I cannot charge the battery, it charges in another Macbook. I press the power button and nothing happens. No sign of life, the screen remains white.

If your battery isn't charging, I'd say that points to the DC-in board. However, if charging your battery in another laptop then installing it in your computer doesn't work, that sounds more like a logic board issue.
