"Clear paper jam then touch OK" message after checking paper path

At power on, drive motor makes grinding sound. Message “Clear paper path then touch OK” comes on the screen after any check for a paper jam. Any time the motor runs, it seems to grind loudly. Strange set of conditions. Can you help?
