Resetting the SMC is a temporary fix if the battery is faulty but good idea to try at least.

OP check the battery health with an application called coconut battery which can be downloaded online.

After SMC you may see the service battery message dissapear but reappear again if you drain the battery and charge it again indicating the system has found something wrong with the battery.

I also replaced the battery with the iFixit kit. The SMC reset didn’t help, I still get the message: “Service Recommended”. Is it a fault with the battery delivered with the ifixit kit?

Contact the iFixit store for a replacement.

This isn't a problem with the new battery, once the chip detects that the original battery has degraded past 80% (or so) or has started to rapidly degrade and inflate, the message will trigger and it's impossible to remove without paying for an official battery change from apple. This is obviously a way for apple to limit what people can fix and sell on (nobody will buy a phone with a "severely degraded battery message" even if the battery is effectively brand new and and 100%).

That is not true! you need to reset SMC fully to clear the set value. Or the battery is defective.
