How to diagnose camera not working?

Hi folks, thanking you in advance for your replies.

The camera on my Macbook aluminium unibody A2178 13” is not working for FaceTime, Photobooth, iMovie etc. The sensor light comes on for all apps, but the screen does not show anything and remains black.

Please can you help me understand how to diagnose which spare part to buy to fix it. Is it the camera itself, or the camera board, or the cable?

Thanks,

Greg

Start from the following guide, but it’s really lots of work. Unless you have a known good board, schematics and a multimeter which might as well not tell much about the fault in the end, you’ll have to purchase a camera and cable and plug them in place for diagnosing. Considering all the work needed, parts, and the fact that plastic parts start being quite old and easier to break, it might be handier and more reasonable to replace the display with a used one.
