Random shutdown, with or without battery

Hi,

I bought cheap an old MBA 11’. The laptop was shutting down randomly.

I cleaned up the dust from the fan and the board, removed the heatsink to change the thermal paste (or the leftover gunk…).

I monitor the temperature constantly and the shutdown are not related to overheating. I had shutdowns at 50°C.

Thinking it could be power related (the battery has 995 cycles) I tried to pull the battery from the device and ran it without, shutdown again.

Did I miss something? Or is it simply a dead logic board that I won’t be able to repair.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Did you review the crash logs to see if something got reported.

Yes. Nothing in the crash log.

Did a fresh Catalina install when I got the machine. Took a couple tries before I could successfully finish the installation.

The shutdown is nearly instantaneous. So I doubt anything could be reported .

It looks like power was switched off. And usually the laptop needs a couple minutes to start again unless I reset the SMC

This sounds like a VRM issue on the logic board. The logic board will need repairs or replacement.

Try running the onboard diagnostics. Press the D key when you restart your system.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations. Let us know what error code you get.

Tried, got the error a lot of people seem to have.

Error: 0x8000000000000003, Cannot Load 'EFI/Drivers/TestSupport.efi'

Status: 0x00000003

Darn! Apple messed up the onboard diagnostics, so that's out. You'll need to visit an Apple Store to have them run diagnostics to get the error code. They should do it for free! As they messed up diagnostics.

Waiting for my genius bar RDV. Would a tool like that help me check things? https://github.com/sicreative/VoltageShi...

I know it's not compatible for value write, but maybe the monitor mode would help me.

I don't see this utility helping you here.
